A Complete Guide to Beam Clamps and Travel Trolleys

In this post I will go through everything about the main devices for using with a chain block or electric chain hoist of any kind:

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BEAM AND A GIRDER CLAMP?

Some variations of clamps are used to lift, stack, and position girders while others must not be used for lifting and are instead used as a suspension point on a beam for a hoist.

A beam clamp is used to attach lifting equipment, such as a hoist or chain block, to a suitable beam or gantry which is fit for purpose and that can have compatible capacities.

Available in a variety of capacities and functions, they are made to suit different beam sizes, can be adjustable, and can be suitable for temporary or permanent uses.

    SAFE USE OF BEAM CLAMPS

Some Dos and Don'ts to ensure the longevity of your clamp and personal safety:

    DO:

    • Inspect beam clamps before handling, using and storing.

    • Check that the supporting beam must be undamaged, not warped, and suited to the weight of the load and equipment used.

    • Make sure that the beam/girder width is suitable for clamp and that the clamp is centered over the load.

    • If using a hoist, check that the chain is not twisted that the hook is hanging directly above the load.

    • Test the operation safely and that the brakes are working, the path is clear, and the area is prepared.

    DON’T:

    • Use clamps or any other lifting equipment made for other uses.

    • Make modifications to the clamp.

    • Throw or drop a clamp.

    • Force a clamp onto an unsuitable beam or hoist.

    • Leave a lifting operation unattended.

    REMEMBER:

Most beam clamps are developed for use as a suspension point for a hoist and not for attachment onto a load that is being lifted.

    COMPARE CLAMPS

    YALE YC5 BEAM CLAMP

Available in capacities of 1000kg up to 10,000kg

Yale YC5 Beam Clamps are a quick, easy and effective rigging point for lifting equipment.

It comes complete with a locking device and the threaded spindle allows an easy attachment and secure grip to the beam flange.

Yale SC92 Beam Clamp with Shackles

Available in capacities of 1000kg up to 20,000kg

The Yale SC92 beam clamp is the same as the YC5 with the exception that it comes complete with painted steel shackles.

Camlok TTG Girder Horizontal Flange Stacking Clamp

Available in capacities of 500kg up to 7500kg

The TTG girder clamp is for transporting girders in the vertical position and is ideal for use within steel stockholders.

The jaw locking lever secures the clamp in place when positioned on the girder’s horizontal flange.

These clamps can be used just one at a time, although they should be used in pairs along with a spreader beam if the girder is long.

Camlok TTR Vertical Flange Girder Vertical Stacking Clamp

Available in capacities of 750kg up to 3000kg

The TTR girder clamp differs from the previous one by being able to transport girders in the horizontal position, also ideal for use within steel stockholders.

The jaw locking lever secures the clamp in place when positioned on the girder’s vertical flange.

Just like the TTG, these clamps can be used just one at a time, although they should be used in pairs along with a spreader beam if the girder is long.

Camlok CG Standard Girder Turning Clamp

Available in capacities of 1000kg and 2000kg

CG girder clamps are used for lifting and rotating girders through 90 degrees.

A single clamp can be used unless the girder is long, then two clamps on a spreader beam should be used.

The jaw locking lever secures the clamp in place when positioned on the girder’s Horizontal flange and can be lifted and rotated.

    SELECTING A TRAVEL TROLLEY

Beam travel trolleys are available in a variety of different types with different options- electric or manual, push or pull,  and different beam widths. The decision of what type of trolley to pick should be based on a few key elements:

    PUSH TROLLEYS

Push trolleys are designed to operate manually and horizontally on a flat or tapered beam by  using the bottom flange and a set of wheels. They will support a chain block with a top hook or lug mounted suspension and are preferred if you’re going to be lifting lighter loads.

    GEARED TROLLEYS

When the accurate placement of a heavier load is needed, a geared trolley is the best choice. Beam gear trolleys are comprised of a looped hand chain connected to a sprocket. The sprocket works the gears which allows the wheels to move when the hand chain is pulled - this will cause the trolley to move in the opposite direction.

    ELECTRIC TROLLEYS

Electric trolleys are especially recommended for loads weighing more than 1000kg that are frequently lifted and moved over long distances.

    INTEGRAL TRAVEL TROLLEY BEAM CLAMPS

These trolleys easily install to any beam and fix to any hoist and loads you wish to move. It can be quickly adjusted to fit the beam width by simply turning the handle and locking it into position. The handle and snap-pin stops are galvanised for added corrosion protection.

    SAFE USE OF BEAM TROLLEYS

Which ever type of beam trolley you choose, proper use will help you get the most out of it and prolong the life of your product, saving you time and money.

Here are some steps to follow and some aspects to avoid to ensure correct proper handling and usage

    DO:

    • Carefully handle and correctly store trolleys.

    • Inspect and test trolleys and other lifting equipment before use and storage.

    • Check that the wheels profile and trolley width is suitable for the track.

    • Make sure that the trolley is suited and adjusted to fit the beam width.

    • Ensure that the capacities of the trolley, beam, and hoist are all suitable to the load being lifted.

    • The chain of the hoist should be long enough to hang about 2 feet above the operating level.

    • Remember to lock the adjustment bar before every use.

    • Clear the beam of any obstructions or debris.

    DON’T:

    • Expose trolleys to corrosive chemicals, steam or water without checking the specifications.

    • Force the suspension hook onto the load bar.

    • Throw or drop a trolley.

    • Use a trolley with damaged wheel flanges.

    • Side load a trolley at an angle. This can bend the beam flange or trolley

    • Use a trolley on a beam that is not designed for use with a trolley.

    • Modify the trolley. This will void the manufacturer's warranty and compromise it’s safety.

    • Over-torque the trolley. This can cause bending of the adjustment rods.

HOW TO MAINTAIN A BEAM TRAVEL TROLLEY

Once you have the right trolley, it's simple to look after it from there with these quick tips:

    EXAMINATION

Although all lifting equipment is rigorously tested and sold in the best condition, it is in your best interest to examine your trolley before use to ensure that you are happy with using it. The following should be checked:

    • The weight of the load does not exceed the maximum capacity of the trolley, hoist, or beam.

    • The trolley is marked with its W.L.L and ID number.

    • The side plates, suspension shackle, gears and all of the other components are free from ware, distortion and damage.

    • The chain should be sitting correctly in the sprockets and are not twisted.

    • The adjustment bar should be straight, the threads free of stretch and damage and the locking device functions correctly.

    STORING AND HANDLING

Always inspect trolleys after use and before storing them away- they should be damage-free, dry, clean, and be stored in a clean dry place to protect from corrosion.

Operating chains, power controls and any attachments can be removed and stored separately to avoid damaging them.

    INSTALLING

The instruction leaflet of both the beam trolley and hoist should be followed along with the tips mentioned in this blog post.

Check that the track is level and has an even surface and it is fitted with suitable end stops and the trolley is set to the proper width and it’s wheels are suitable for the track.

Ensure that end stops are attached and all nuts and bolts are tightened.

    MAINTENANCE

The trolley should be maintained along with the hoist or any other equipment being used with it.

    • All moving parts should be regularly lubricated.

    • Clean the wheels and the track and make sure its free from all debris and lubricants.

    • Regularly inspect the trolley and all associated equipment for damage, ware,  loose fittings, distortion and illegible labeling.
